〜 「インナーマミー」について 〜

「出産は人類最大の創作活動」と、子供を産んだ知人に言われた。なんだそれはと思い「あなたは本当に母親から生まれてきたの？」と、ダンサーに尋ねる。ひとりはゆるぎなく「はい」と答え、もうひとりは「うん、多分ね」と柔らかくうなずき、最後のひとりは少し考えてから「そう思う」と答えた。
友達や同級生・仕事仲間や昔の恋人にも聞いたが、やはり同じような言葉ばかりが返ってくる。どうやら人間が母親から生まれるということは、あまりにも当たり前のようだ。堂々と疑うことなく答えるその声は、これっぽっちも揺らぐことがない。・・なんだか恐ろしくてたまらなくなる。
そこで、同じ質問を自分の母にしてみることにした。某日、とある焼肉屋にて。目の前には〝母親〟と名付けられた一人の女が遠い目をして頬杖を付いている。
「あのさ、」
「ん？」
「私、本当にあなたから生まれてきたの？」
「うん。」
ジュージューと音を立てて焼かれる、ハラミの煙が目にしみる。彼女はハラミをひっくり返しながら
「あなたは私から生まれてきたし、私も母から生まれてきたんだよ」と確信を持って告げた。ビクビクしながら目をそらす。煙のカーテンの向こうから、うっすらと彼女の声がちらつく。
「ヒトの形になって生まれてきたのは、あなたが初めてだよ。」
「えっ」
「長い不妊治療で２人流産したのよ、投薬とか採血いっぱいしてね。」
「・・・。」
「医者から、今晩ヤッてくださいって指令が出るの。」
「どうだった？」
「事務的で、機械的なセックスだった。」
彼女はハラミを口に含んで微笑んだ。そばで聴いていた父が「それは、僕が下手だったからなんだ。」とすかさずフォローすると、彼は「どんな方法で生まれても、それは人類が進化していく上で必要な存在かもしれないね」と、ポソっと呟いた。私はたまらなくなってトイレに入り、鏡の前に立つ。そこに映る自分に向かって同じ質問をしたが、彼女はいっこうに口を閉ざすばかりだった。
人の創り出すものは、実はその母の母の母の、そのまた母の、ずーっと遠い昔の母の、もっともっとはるか彼方にいる奥深くの母親の、密やかな策略かもしれない。そうなるともはや「これは私の作品です」なんて、うかつに言えなくなりそうだ。からだじゅうの細胞に、母の解き明かせなかった数式がめい
いっぱい詰まっているような感覚だ。彼女たちが長い年月をかけて受け継いできた美しい数式を、私は生きて証明したいと思っている。

〜 About “Inner Mommy” 〜
“Giving birth is humankind’s greatest creative activity,” an acquaintance who’d had baby told me. What on earth? I asked some dancers, “Where you really born from your mother?” One unhesitatingly said, ”Yes.” Another nodded slightly as she said, “Yeah, probably,” and the last one thought a little before answering, “I believe so.”
I also asked my friends, classmates, colleagues, and old boyfriends. They all replied with the same words. It seems to be a given that humans are born from their mothers. That voice, answering with dignity, without a hint of doubt, unshakable. . . It is somehow terrifying and irresistible.
So I decided to try the same question on mu mother. One day, at a yakiniku restaurant, a woman I call “Mother” sat right in front of me, her eyes distant, resting her chin on her hands.
“Well, . . .”
“Hmm?”
“Was I really born out of your body?”
“Yes.”
The smoke from the skit steak sputtering on the grill gets in my eyes. While turning over the meat, she announced with confidence, “You were born out of me and I was born out of my mother.” I looked away nervously. Her voice flickers slightly behind the curtain of smoke.
“You were the first time that I gave birth to something in human form.”
“What?”
“I had extended treatment for infertility and to two miscarriages. It was a lot of medicine and drawing blood.”
“. . .”
“Then the doctor said we should do it that night.”
“How was it?”
“It was business-like, mechanical sex.”
She smiled with her mouth full of steak. My father, who was listening at her side, said, “That’s because I was not good at it.” After a brief pause, he muttered, “No matter how someone is born, he or she may be necessary for human beings to evolve.” Unable to stand it, I went to the toilet, stood in front of the mirror, and asked myself the same question. But the woman in the mirror kept her mouth shut.
What people create may actually be a secret scheme going beyond mother’s mother’s mother, way back to a mother in the distant past. If so, we can’t just say, ”This is my creation.” The cells in our bodies are packed with mathematical formulas that our mother could not solve. I want to live in testimony of the beautiful formulas that those woman passed down over the centuries.
